Peru leads exports to EU among CAN members

LIMA, Sept 18 (NNN-ANDINA) — Among Andean Community (Spanish: Comunidad Andina CAN) members, Peru held the first position in terms of exports to the European Union (EU) in 2018, amounting to US$7.009 billion, Andean Parliament member Mario Zuñiga said.

According to the official, one of the main characteristics of the Inca country’s exports is their diversification, as it sent products of 2,102 subheadings to EU members.

Peru was followed by Colombia (US$4.895 billion, 1,675 subheadings); Ecuador (US$3.269 billion, 990 subheadings); and Bolivia (US$776 million, 567 subheadings).

Peruvian participation in the total CAN exports to the EU registered the highest increase, as it went from 39.8% in 2017 to 43.9% in 2018.

The main Peruvian products sent to the European bloc during 2018 were copper and zinc ores, liquefied natural gas, avocados, and decaffeinated unroasted coffee.

It must be noted the United States and China are the main destinations for CAN exports, followed by the EU.

Likewise, the official stressed it is necessary to join forces in order to invest more in science and technology with the purpose of selling products with added value. — NNN-ANDINA
