SANAA, Sept 15 (NNN-SABA) – Yemen’s health officials launched oral cholera vaccinations in Sanaa, in efforts to curb the spread of the disease that has infected over one million people in the war-torn country.
The door-to-door campaign is being carried out by the local health authorities, with support from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The vaccination campaign is planned to last nine days, aiming at all residents, except pregnant women, in three major districts in central Sanaa.
Meanwhile, activists launched an awareness campaign on social media, to lecture people on having access to good sanitation systems and clean drinking water.
The health sector is badly affected by the war, which allowed the spread of cholera and other diseases.
The epidemic has been spreading in Yemen since Oct, 2016, but the number of cholera cases re-surged after Apr, 2017, as the country’s sewer system stopped working because of the war.
Cholera in Yemen has set the world’s highest record with infection of over one million people and over 2,000 have been confirmed dead, since 2017, according to WHO.– NNN-SABA
