New act of violence in Colombia; two former guerrillas murdered

BOGOTA, Sept 8 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The murder of two other former guerrillas of the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP) is today the most recent act of violence in Colombia.

A National Police team is investigating the crime committed against Milton Urrutia and Jose Milton Peña, who were shot while they were in a hotel in the city of Cucuta (northeast), reported local media.

During the incident, Arsenio Maldonado, another former guerrilla, was wounded by gunshot to the thorax and the head and is in very serious conditions.

According to a recent report by the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation, a new wave of political violence is shaking Colombia as a result of murders committed against former guerrillas of the former FARC-EP in reincorporation process.

Between November 24, 2016 (the date on which the Peace Agreement between the State and the former guerrilla movement was signed) and August 12, 2019, the Foundation registered 106 assassinated persons who were carrying out work to reincorporate themselves into society.

These people worked in different jobs and educational scenarios and exercising leadership roles in their communities for the defense of peace, the environment, the implementation of the Agreement, among others.

Likewise, 26 of their relatives have been murdered, the Foundation explained.

It also indicated that the lack of political will to set up and maintain the National Commission on Security Guarantees and the Special Investigation Unit hinders the creation of possible solutions to reduce the risk of those who signed the Agreement and expresses the Government’s lack of commitment to the integrity of the former guerrillas. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
