Israeli Military Chief, UNIFIL Commander Meet Over Current Tensions

JERUSALEM, Sept 3 (NNN-MA’AN) – Israeli army said, its military chief met with the force commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a day after hours-long intense fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, along the Lebanese border.

Israel’s Chief of General Staff, Aviv Kohavi, met with the UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Stefano Del Col, an Israeli military spokesperson said.

It was the first meeting between the two.

The army said, the meeting focused on “UNIFIL’s mission in south Lebanon, mandate renewal and the current tense situation between Lebanon and Israel,” without mentioning where the meeting took place.

Kohavi urged Del Col to act against the production facilities of precision-guided missiles, which Israel accused last week, Hezbollah and Iran of building, in Lebanon.

Kohavi warned that Israel “is prepared for a wide variety of scenarios,” adding that, the army “will not accept” fire from southern Lebanon or precision-guided missile manufacturing project on Lebanese soil.

On Sunday, UNIFIL condemned both Israel and Hezbollah, for “a serious violation” of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which intends to keep the calm along the volatile border.

In the incident, Hezbollah fired two or three anti-tank missiles from the village of Maroun al-Ras, in southern Lebanon, towards military targets in northern Israel. The missiles hit an Israeli military base and a vehicle.

In response, Israel launched an attack, including more than 100 artillery shells, in addition to airstrikes with attack helicopters.

No injuries were reported on either side.

Yesterday (Monday), the border area was quiet.– NNN-MA’AN
