NILAI (Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia), Aug 26 (Bernama) — With the two gold medals won at the National Track Cycling Championships at the National Velodrome on Sunday, top Malaysian cyclist Mohd Azizul Hasni Awang in on track to chalk up more positive results at several more races after this.
The national track cycling champion said he did not expect to beat another national racer, Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis in the men’s 1km individual time trial as it is the Selangor rider’s pet event.
The Terengganu rider collected the gold after clocking the fastest time in 1 minute 03.168 seconds followed by Muhammad Fadhil with a silver (1:04.283 seconds) while Johor’s Amar Danial Masri took the bronze medal in 1 minute 05.052 seconds.
“On the overall, I am satisfied with my achievement but I am also happy with Muhammad Fadhil’s performance while Muhammad Shah Firdaus could not take part due to illness,” he told reporters at the end of the race.
Mohd Azizulhasni also won the sprint event after beating Muhammad Fadhil.
In this regard, Mohd Azizulhasni who is better known as “The Pocket Rocketman” said he was satisfied with the collection points at the local championships and the Southeast Asian Grand Prix at the same venue recently to booth a ticket to race in the World Cup Series which is a platform to collect points to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“For me, my point collection is sufficient to qualify for the World Cup Series but Muhammad Shah has to earn more in the next championships after this,” he said.
Meanwhile, women’s track cycling queen, Fatehah Mustapa also won two gold medals in the women’s 500m individual time trial and the women’s sprint as the best warm-up for the Asia Cup track Cycling Championships in India from Sept 21-23.
“I am satisfied with my performance especially the time recorded which is slightly slower than the Southeast Asian GP here recently but I will definitely hunt for a medal in India next month,” she said.
