KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia is committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 Agenda via the coordinated development of SDG indicators, says the chief statistician Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
He said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) played a vital role in ensuring that the development of the indicators would be the focal point of the ASEAN Working Group SDG’s indicators (WGSDGI) development, both locally and internationally.
“To date, Malaysia’s SDG progress can be seen in its governance and implementation of a roadmap, data assessment and data achievement in keeping with the five pillars of prosperity, partnership, peace, planet and people,” he said in his speech at the closing of the 62nd International Statistical Institute (ISI) World Statistics Congress (WSC) here, today.
Mohd Uzir said Malaysia aimed to be a game-changer in creating a bigger spectrum to show people that statistics matter.
“In this new era, modernising statistical systems is not only the adoption of statistical principles and standards, but also an ability to understand the new concept of economy, that innates through digitised world activities,” he added.
He said statistics provided the information and components to create good choices and solutions, as well as the resources to solve problems.
“Numbers matter and statistics are essential in dealing with many current global challenges and economic evaluation. I believe the role of statistics with new data can change trends and with good statistics, we can aim to change the imbalance and help the future generation,” he said.
About 2,500 delegates from 130 countries, comprising statistical researchers, academia, industry practitioners, analysts, policymakers and thought leaders, are participating in the six-day Congress.
Mohd Uzir said he would like to see more working partnerships between the public and private sectors.
The DoSM is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and is now closer to realising its vision of becoming a leading statistical organisation that is recognised on the international stage by 2020.
It is also focused on making statistics current and relevant to every person, as it plays a crucial role in the national economic evolution and in the daily lives of Malaysians.
The 63rd ISI World Statistics Congress 2021 will be held at The Hague, Netherlands.
