Peru: President confident Congress will approve early general elections proposal

SATIPO (Junin region, Peru), Aug 24 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra is confident Parliament will approve the early general elections by 2020 proposal and informed he will hold a first meeting with Congress Chairman Pedro Olaechea on Aug 26, within the framework of the Justice System Reform Council.

In this sense, the Head of State urged lawmakers to consult and listen to the citizens concerning the constitutional reform bill. 

Likewise, the top official indicated the Congress’ Constitution Commission should assess the initiative in the first week of September, so it can be then evaluated at Parliament’s plenary session. 

“I am sure that, after assessing it calmly, serenely, and objectively, Congress will approve the early general elections bill we proposed on July 28,” he expressed. 

Furthermore, the statesman said he will coordinate a meeting with Olaechea on Monday in order to address the agenda’s first item, which is the early general elections proposal. 

Other subjects are related to the Competitiveness and Productivity Plan aimed at boosting the national economy.

“We must provide a greater security to Peruvians, improve social indicators, as well as strengthen institutions and democracy,” he added. 

Moreover, President Vizcarra reiterated his willingness for dialogue has been permanent since he assumed the Presidency in March 2018, recalling he had held meetings with former Congress Chairmen Luis Galarreta and Daniel Salaverry. — NNN-ANDINA
