KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) today announced the promotion of Datuk Mokhtar Hussain as its editor-in-chief with immediate effect.
Mokhtar, 58, has been the deputy editor-in-chief (domestic news service) and was serving as the acting editor-in-chief for the last two months until today.
Bernama said in a statement that as the editor-in-chief, Mokhtar will ensure the continuity of all editorial operations while the news agency progresses to the organisational and newsroom transformation in order to meet the digital challenges that the media the world over is facing.
Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, in welcoming the elevation of Mokhtar, said: Mokhtar’s promotion follows a long tradition in Bernama of the position of editor-in-chief being filled through internal promotion.
“Mokhtar is a career Bernama journalist and, with 34 years of service to his credit, I am confident he will take the national news agency to greater heights. The media industry, both print and digital, is going through a critical phase, which makes it even more challenging for Bernama as a national news agency.
“Having been the editor-in-chief myself previously, I know Mokhtar will have a tougher ride given the changing media landscape, but I am equally confident he will be up to the mark.”
Mokhtar started his career in Bernama in 1985 as a news executive and has held various positions, including as Sabah Bureau chief and news and current affairs manager, Audio Visual Service.
Mokhtar holds a Master’s degree in Business Law from University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Jurisprudence from the University of Malaya, as well as a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Mass Communication from UKM.
