Haze forces two schools in Miri to close

MIRI, Aug 22 (NNN-BERNAMA) — A total of 1,906 pupils including 50 pre-schoolers, from two primary schools here were unable to continue the school session today as the schools were forced to close due to worsening haze in the Kuala Baram area of this city in Malaysia’s Sarawak state.

Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee secretariat chief Major (PA) Ismail Mahedin said the two affected schools were Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kuala Baram 2 and national-type Chinese school (SJK) Chung Hua Tudan.

“School sessions had to be stopped as the Air Pollution Index (API) has worsen at 232 with the worst affected is SJK Chung Hua Tudan which is also located close to the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Miri,” he said in a statement today.

Ismail said SK Kuala Baram 2 has 50 pre-schoolers, 556 students and 45 teachers while SJK Chung Hua Tudan has 1,300 students and 64 teachers.
