Honduras: Gunmen kill 4 during family funeral, 4 others injured

TEGUCIGALPA, Aug 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) —Gunmen opened fire at a funeral in Honduras on Tuesday, killing four members of the same family in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, police said.

The victims were burying Marlon David Portillo, 27, the son of an alleged local drug dealer known as the “Black Cat.”

The father was killed in 2010 in Tegucigalpa, along with six bodyguards. His son was killed on Sunday in San Pedro Sula.

Police said at least eight armed men opened fire on an SUV at the local cemetery, killing two men and two women, all members of the Portillo family. Three of them were cousins of the son.

Another three women and a man were injured in the attack and taken to an area hospital.

Police closed streets in the city as they searched for the killers, who eyewitnesses said were dressed in military uniforms and balaclavas.

Honduras has one of the world’s highest homicide rates, with an average of 8.9 people murdered each day per 100,000 inhabitants. — NNN-XINHUA
