JAKARTA, April 29 (NNN-Bernama) — Indonesia will invest heavily in its education sector, focusing on upgrading learning facilities and accelerating nationwide school repairs, with a target of completing improvements to around 288,000 schools by 2028.
President Prabowo Subianto said the government is committed to making education the cornerstone of national development, including plans to enhance teaching infrastructure and expand access to quality learning.
“Education is the key to the revival of our nation. I will give it my full attention and I will invest massively in education for the future of our nation. Every Indonesian child must be given the best education,” he said in a programme in Central Java, according to Antara News Agency, on Wednesday.
Prabowo said the government has begun scaling up efforts, noting that improvements were carried out in 17,000 schools in 2025 and that 70,000 schools are set for revitalisation by the end of this year.
“We are targeting around 288,000 schools to be completed by 2028,” he said, adding that further upgrades are planned for 100,000 schools in 2027 and 2028.
He said beyond physical upgrades, the government plans to equip classrooms with digital screens or smart boards to support more interactive teaching methods.
“Currently there is only one per school. Some have two. That means our target is still perhaps three to four more per school. This year we are striving to add three more across Indonesia,” he said.
He said the initiative is expected to improve access to digitally available syllabi, allowing both teachers and students to revisit lessons more easily.
Prabowo said the government also plans to establish a central teaching studio in Jakarta to enable top educators, including native speakers, to deliver lessons remotely.
“We will have a central studio in Jakarta, with the best teachers. For example, for English, we will bring in native speakers who can teach everyone who needs it.
“The same for Mandarin. We want our schoolchildren to be able to speak English, Mandarin, and several foreign languages, starting from elementary school,” he said.
