WASHINGTON, April 29 (NNN-Bernama-dpa) — The United States (US) will issue a limited-edition series of passports featuring an image of President Donald Trump inside the document to mark the country’s 250th anniversary, German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing the White House said on Tuesday.
The special design will be offered as the default option in Washington while supplies last, US media reported, citing the State Department, with the standard design remaining available online and elsewhere in the country.
During his second term, Trump has made a point of prominently displaying his name and likeness. Initiatives include a “Trump Gold Card” offering residency rights in exchange for a US$1 million payment, while his portrait also appears on an annual pass for US national parks.
His signature is also set to appear on US dollar bills — a first for a sitting president. He has also overseen the renaming of the John F Kennedy Centre as the Trump Kennedy Centre.
The passport image is based on Trump’s official portrait for his second term. The plan has drawn criticism and mockery on social media, with some users comparing it to practices associated with autocratic leaders.
The White House account on X responded by posting an image of a commemorative Washington transit card issued for the 2009 inauguration of Barack Obama, which also featured his likeness.
