KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 (Bernama) — The national wushu squad have lined up nine of their best exponents for the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines this November.
This represents the smallest team for the full-contact sport in the biennial event so far.
Malaysian Wushu Federation president Datuk Chong Kim Fatt said the list comprised eight men and one woman in the Sanda and Taolu disciplines, which is about half of the 20 athletes announced during 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur.
While it was difficult to set a medal target as the squad’s four world champions were not listed due to respective disciplines not being contested at the Games, Chong said the wushu squad would try their best to win medals for the national contingent.
Those listed in the team are Teh Chee Chong, Lee Wei Loong, Kelvin Teng Kai Wen and Chong Jian Hwa for the Sanda discipline, while 2016 world champion Wong Weng Son, Yeap Wai Kin, Loh Choon How, Calvin Lee Wai Leong and Sydney Chin Sy Xuan (women’s) for Taolu.
In the KL SEA Games, Malaysia won six of the 17 gold medals on offer for the sport.
