Mount Kerinci in Indonesia erupts

JAMBI, Indonesia, Aug 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The volcanic mountain of Kerinci in Jambi in the island of Sumatra, Indonesia erupted Wednesday afternoon.

According to local media reports the eruption has prompted authorities to advise airlines to avoid the area.

Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) head Kasbani said ash and smoke had spewed as high as 800 meters from the peak of the mountain or 4,605 meters above sea level.

Further eruptions could disrupt flight operations in the area.

Indonesia’s news agency Antara reported that for now, the event is localised and has posed no threat to the people in the area.

Nevertheless, the authorities have warned residents and tourists to stay at least 3 kilometers from the crater.
