Syria Rejects Turkish-U.S. Talks About Buffer Zone In North Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria, July 27 (NNN-SANA) – The Syrian Foreign Ministry said, in a statement on Friday, that, the Syrian government rejects the Turkish-U.S. talks, about creating a buffer zone in northern Syria.

The Syrian government completely rejects the Turkish-U.S. understandings, regarding the creation of a buffer or security zone in northern Syria, as it would constitute a “flagrant encroachment” upon the sovereignty of Syria, said the ministry in its statement.

While stressing that the Syrian army would keep on hunting down terrorist groups, the ministry said, the Syrian government is committed to ending the prolonged crisis, through a Syrian-led political process.

Turkish and U.S. officials started talks about establishing a “security zone” in northern Syria, earlier this week.

The idea, which has been on the table before, aims to separate the Kurdish fighters from the Turkish border.

The creation of the buffer zone was first initiated by U.S. President, Donald Trump, in Jan, at a time when the Turkish government was threatening an offensive against the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in northern Syria.

However, the U.S. and Turkey don’t seem to be on the same page just yet, as Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu said, his country wasn’t satisfied with the U.S. new proposals for the safe zone.– NNN-SANA
