HAVANA, July 26 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Cuba strengthened bilateral ties, which were described as excellent on Thursday.
Lavrov was received on Wednesday by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, to whom he expressed satisfaction with the excellent state of bilateral relations, based on the historic ties of friendship between the two peoples and governments, according to an official press release.
The Cuban president and the Russian foreign minister agreed on the willingness to work to continue strengthening those ties and exchanged opinions on issues on the international agenda.
The head of Russian diplomacy also attended the ceremony to reinaugurate the Statue of the Republic in the Capitol building in Havana, along with the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raul Castro, and other officials.
There, Lavrov noted that Cuba is a strategic partner for Russia, and highlighted the satisfactory result of the restoration of the Statue by a team of experts from his country.
After the ceremony, Army General Raul Castro Ruz spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The agenda of the Russian delegation also included a joint press briefing with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Havana.
Both foreign ministers expressed their countries’ willingness to continue strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation in the light of US measures against Cuba.
Lavrov’s official visit to Cuba is part of a Latin American tour that will also include Brazil and Suriname.
Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1942 with the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), which were severed in 1952 until the revolutionary government resumed bilateral ties on May 8, 1960. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
