ABUJA, July 25 (NNN-XINHUA) — Eight workers at a local construction site in southern Nigeria died after they were trapped in an underground water safety tank and became unconscious, local police said.
The incident occurred on Monday at a village in Igboeze North local government area of the southern state of Enugu.
Ebere Amaraizu, a spokesman for the police in the state, said one of the construction workers got trapped inside the underground tank at the construction site while trying to evacuate water.
Soon after, his colleagues went to offer help to him but also got trapped and became unconscious.
They were all later rescued but died on their way to the hospital, the police spokesman said.
State Police Chief Suleiman Balarabe described the incident as “shocking and unfortunate”, and ordered a full-scale investigation. — NNN-XINHUA
