State Police Chief Killed In Helicopter Crash In Mexico

MEXICO CITY, July 25 (NNN-XINHUA) —The Secretary of Public Security of central-western Mexican state of Michoacan Jose Martin Godoy died on Wednesday along with three other people in a helicopter crash, local authorities informed.

Michoacan’s state governor Silvano Aureoles confirmed the incident on Twitter and said that the other victims were another official and two pilots.

“Everything indicates that the weather conditions caused the incident; however, we will wait for the investigation results from relevant authorities,” the governor posted on his social media account.

According to the state government, the helicopter crashed when it was flying over a mountainous area in the municipality of Villa Madero, located in the east of the state, about 50 kilometers from Morelia, the state’s capital.

Godoy served as chief of Michoacan’s police department since the beginning of April and before that, he served as the state attorney for several years.

Michoacan has been affected by the violence of drug cartels who fight each other for control of territory and drug trafficking routes since the last decade. — NNN-XINHUA
