NEW DELHI, July 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The number of Indian citizens in Malaysian jails due to violation of local laws is 576, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Saudi Arabia has the largest number of Indian prisoners overseas at 1,811, followed by 1,392 in the United Arab Emirates, 1,160 in Nepal and 689 in the United States.
The number of Indian prisoners, including undertrials, in foreign jails as of May 31 this year was 8,189, the foreign ministry told the Indian parliament on Thursday.
“However, due to strong privacy laws prevailing in many countries, the local authorities do not share information on prisoners unless the person concerned consents to the disclosure of such information,” the ministry said.
Indian diplomatic missions abroad “remain vigilant and closely monitor the incidents of Indian nationals being put in jail in foreign countries for violation of local laws or alleged violation of local laws,” it said.
