BEIRUT, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese President Joseph Aoun held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday to discuss the latest developments in Lebanon and the region, according to a presidency statement reported by local Al Jadeed TV.
During the talks, Aoun conveyed the Lebanese government's official stance on the situation, thanked Trump for his efforts to facilitate a ceasefire in Lebanon, and called on him to continue efforts to secure a swift ceasefire as soon as possible, the statement said.
Trump responded that he is committed to meeting the Lebanese demand for a ceasefire as soon as possible, and told Aoun that a decision on the possibility of approving a ceasefire in Lebanon would be made within hours, according to the statement.
Earlier, Aoun had refused to engage in talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the statement added.
The Israeli military has instructed forces on the ground to prepare for a potential ceasefire in Lebanon that could take effect tonight, Israel's Haaretz reported Thursday. Enditem
