MOSCOW, April 9 (NNN-Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) — Executives from oil companies have contacted the White House to voice their concerns about the possibility of Iran charging ships for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the Politico newspaper reported, citing a source familiar with the matter, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
Oil company executives are appealing to the White House, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance to oppose allowing Iran to charge tolls for passage through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as a condition for peace talks, the report said.
Representatives of the oil industry met with senior administration officials at the State Department on Wednesday morning to express their concerns, the source said.
On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said a proposal floated by US President Donald Trump to charge fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be discussed in the coming weeks. The Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing Hamid Hosseini, an official spokesman for Iran’s Union of Exporters of Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products, that Iran is prepared to allow oil tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz for a toll of US$1 for each barrel of oil on board.
