MAMBASA, April 3 (dpa) – An attack in eastern Congo left 43 people dead, according to military reports that blamed Islamist group ADF.
The group, linked to Islamic State, attacked civilians in the Mambasa area of Ituri province, the army said.
A spokesman for the Mambasa area told dpa that attackers armed with machetes and knives had killed at least 32 people and set fire to houses and vehicles.
The victims included villagers and workers from a local mining company. The attack reportedly took place between Wednesday and Thursday.
The ADF militia originated in Uganda in East Africa, where it sought to establish an Islamic state. Following a military defeat, the fighters fled into the forests of neighbouring Congo, where they have been carrying out attacks on Christian villages and churches for almost 30 years.
Violence has been rife for years in resource-rich eastern Congo.
More than 100 militias are fighting there for control of mineral deposits such as coltan, copper and cobalt.
