Air Canada confirms Laguardia accident, says team en route to collision scene

WASHINGTON, March 23 (NNN-Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) — Air Canada, the country’s flag carrier, on Monday confirmed the accident reportedly involving the collision of one of its aircraft with a vehicle at LaGuardia Airport in New York, and further announced that one of its teams is en route to the scene, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

Earlier on Monday, the New York Post reported the collision of an Air Canada aircraft with a firetruck while moving towards its gate at LaGuardia under “poor weather conditions”.

NBC further reported both pilots were killed in the collision. ABC News reported at least 13 individuals were left injured.

“A Jazz Aviation Mitsubishi CRJ-900 was involved in an accident upon landing at New York LaGuardia on March 22, 2026. Flight AC8646, operated by Air Canada Express carrier Jazz Aviation LP (Jazz), originated from Montréal,” the flag carrier said in a statement.

“Air Canada and Jazz Aviation teams are preparing to make their way to the site and details will be provided through additional statements as soon as possible.”

There were some 72 passengers as well as four crew members on the flight, Air Canada determined in a preliminary assessment, however noting that it is still subject to confirmation.

The accident happened around 11.30 pm ET (3:30 am GMT).

“The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that the pilot and the first officer were killed in this accident,” Air Canada said.

The flag carried noted that it cannot currently confirm the exact number of injured or whether other fatalities occurred.

Created in 1937, Air Canada is the country’s flag carrier and its largest airline.

It operates a total of 340 aircraft across its main fleet and, Air Canada Express and Air Canada Rouge.

The company also provides passenger and cargo air transport over 200 destinations worldwide.
