MANILA, Philippines, July 7 (NNN-PNA) – Eight inmates escaped a jail in Lamitan City, on the southern Philippine island province of Basilan, this morning (Sunday), while jail guards are asleep, police said.
Police Lieutenant Colonel, Christopher Panapan, chief of the Lamitan City police, said, the prisoners fled around 8:00 a.m., carting away two M16 assault rifles, issued to the jail guards.
Panapan said, the eight inmates are serving time for murder and drug-related offences.
A manhunt operation has been immediately launched, Panapan said.
Moreover, a probe has also been launched, to look into security lapses, he added.– NNN-PNA
