Almost 15,000 Haitians were deported from Dominican Republic early in April

SANTO DOMINGO, April 17 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) of the Dominican Republic deported 14,874 Haitian citizens in an irregular migratory condition in the first 12 days of this month, the institution reported.

It indicated that this figure is due to the increase in the operations of the interdiction brigades, after the incorporation of the first 160 rapid action agents trained by the DGM, and the suport of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

In the aforementioned period, the agents carried out 176 operations and the largest number of illegal aliens detained were reported in Higüey, La Altagracia province, specifically in Friusa, Mata Mosquito, Villa Playwood, Kosovo and Haiti Chiquito, with 2,327.

The DGM assured in a press release that it will maintain the intensity of its migratory policy with the purpose of safeguarding public order, citizen security and national sovereignty.

Last October, the government of Luis Abinader announced a plan to repatriate up to 10,000 illegal immigrants per week, with the purpose of “reducing the excess of migrant population that is perceived in the communities.”

As an argument, the president also pointed out that the instability in neighboring Haiti generates ‘a significant pressure on Dominican territory, and gave as an example that in 2023 medical attention to citizens of that country represented 9.9 percent of the total services of the health system’. He also mentioned that of the 200,000 foreign minors studying in Dominican schools, about 148,000 are from Port-au-Prince.

This measure takes place in the midst of a generalized crisis in the impoverished territory, with its communities in the hands of mafia gangs linked to drug trafficking, absolute misery and other evils. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
