Mexico: Pres Sheinbaum rules out restoring Ecuador ties after Noboa win re-election

MEXICO CITY, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum ruled out restoring diplomatic relations with Ecuador and questioned the validity of President Daniel Noboa’s reelection victory.

Mexico severed ties with the South American nation a year ago after Noboa’s security forces stormed its embassy in Quito to arrest a former vice president granted asylum.

“Relations will not be resumed, and his victory was also highly questionable,” Sheinbaum told her morning news conference after Noboa claimed a win over rival Luisa Gonzalez.

Sheinbaum had expressed her support for Gonzalez, a fellow leftist.

The rare incursion on diplomatic territory last April sparked an international outcry and led Mexico to withdraw its diplomats and file a lawsuit against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice.

Gonzalez said she would seek a recount after Sunday’s runoff that Noboa won with 55.6 percent of votes, but Ecuador’s electoral council and international observers have ruled out fraud. — NNN-AGENCIES
