Tanzania food production hits 125 percent surplus

DODOMA, April 10 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — Tanzania has successfully maintained food self-sufficiency at 125 percent, a milestone attributed to the increase in food crop production from 20.4 million tonnes in the 2022/2023 farming season to 22.8 million tonnes in the 2023/2024 season.

This announcement was made by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa while presenting the budget speech for the Prime Minister’s Office and its affiliated institutions for the 2025/2026 financial year.

The Prime Minister said the increase in production was due to several factors, including the use of subsidized fertilizer provided to farmers, the expansion of irrigation farming networks, improved agricultural extension services, and the use of quality seeds.

He further stated that fertilizer availability in the country has continued to improve, with 1.21 million tonnes available as of January 31, 2025 — equivalent to 80.9 percent of the estimated national requirement of 1.5 million tonnes for the 2024/2025 farming season.

During the same season, a total of 388,619.87 tonnes of subsidized fertilizer, valued at approximately 131.66bn/-, had already been distributed to around 4,223,278 farmers across the country. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
