TOKYO, Mar 10 (NNN-NHK) – A massive wildfire in the north-eastern Japanese prefecture of Iwate was declared contained yesterday, after damaging at least 210 buildings, according to the local government.
“Based on aerial reconnaissance, we have determined that there is no risk of the fire spreading further,” said Kiyoshi Fuchigami, mayor of the wildfire-hit city of Ofunato, in the prefecture.
The fire, which broke out on Feb 26, has engulfed about 2,900 hectares, or nine percent of the city. As of noon yesterday, the damage included 102 homes, 76 of which were completely destroyed, and 108 non-residential buildings, such as offices.
On the day, Ofunato officials also lifted the evacuation order for a total of 882 people from 361 households in four districts.
“Moving forward, we will focus on supporting the victims and staying alert to ensure the fire is fully extinguished,” Fuchigami added.
Evacuation orders still in effect for 2,424 people across 979 households in Ofunato are expected to be lifted by noon today, according to the city mayor.– NNN-NHK
