Thailand Gears up for 34th ASEAN Summit

BANGKOK, June 21 (NNN-TNA) – Thailand is gearing up for the 34th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Bangkok where leaders of the 10 ASEAN countries will be gathering from Friday to Sunday.

As chair of ASEAN in 2019, Thailand hosts the summit on the theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability,” with high expectations for policy statements on marine debris prevention and an “Indo-Pacific Outlook.”

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha who has just won a parliamentary vote to stay for another term in office will chair the summit even though he has not finished forming his new Cabinet.

The venue of the Summit, The Athenée Hotel, and surrounding areas on Wireless Road are under tight security.   Members of the press arrived at a press center located inside a nearby building complex to register with the organizer.

Around 10,000 police officers and security officials are deployed around the venue and at locations in the capital.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed all of the 10 ASEAN leaders will attend the Summit.   Myanmar’s State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi will be attending on invitation from the Thai Prime Minister.
