ZANZIBAR, March 7 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi has asked the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to support Zanzibar in advancing its blue economy agenda, stressing its significant role in economic growth and people’s well-being.
Speaking during a meeting with UNESCO delegation led by Director-General Audrey Azoulay at the State House, President Mwinyi expressed the government’s commitment to utilise the blue economy.
He said: “We need additional technical expertise, modern technology and financial aid to ensure the sector’s sustainability and enable Zanzibar to fully utilise its abundant marine resources.”
Dr Mwinyi underscored the Blue Economy’s potential to drive economic development, create employment opportunities and improve livelihoods, urging UNESCO to actively collaborate with Zanzibar in fostering the sector’s growth.
Moreover, during the meeting, President Mwinyi appealed to UNESCO to enhance its support for the preservation and development of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key driver of Zanzibar’s tourism industry.
As a major attraction for international visitors, Stone Town significantly contributes to the country’s economy.
Dr Mwinyi pointed out the challenges of maintaining Stone Town’s historical integrity, including the urgent need for restoring ageing buildings and implementing improved traffic management systems that balance modern urban needs with heritage conservation.
He stressed, “Safeguarding Stone Town requires collective efforts from multiple stakeholders, including the private sector and development partners. The government is fully committed to working closely with these entities to ensure the Stone Town’s preservation.”
Furthermore, he advised UNESCO to establish a streamlined and efficient consultation process for discussions related to the restoration of heritage buildings within Stone Town.
On environmental conservation, President Mwinyi noted the significance of Jozani Forest Reserve, stressing the need for sustainable conservation strategies that protect biodiversity while considering the needs of local communities and tourists.
He assured that the government has already implemented agreements with local residents to safeguard and sustain the forest. In response, UNESCO Director-General Ms Azoulay reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Zanzibar’s sustainable development.
She pledged continued assistance in providing technical expertise, advanced technology and strategic support to strengthen the Blue Economy.
She also commended Zanzibar’s progress in the education sector, underscoring UNESCO’s dedication to further collaboration.
After her meeting with President Mwinyi, the UNESCO boss visited some areas in the heritage site, including Palace Museum and House of wonder, both undergoing major repair and former slave market site- Mkunazini.
The Zanzibar Stone Town Conservation and Development Authority (ZSTCDA) Director General, Ali Said Bakar expressed gratitude for the UNESCO’s delegation visit, saying it further cements the good relations. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
