Tanzania-Japan marks 64 years of thriving diplomatic relations

DAR ES SALAAM, March 7 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo has praised the enduring diplomatic relations between Tanzania and Japan, which have flourished for 64 years.

He made the remarks during a reception marking the 65th birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan, held at the residence of Japan’s Ambassador-Designate to Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.

In his speech, Kombo noted Japan’s support to Tanzania, particularly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has been assisting the country since 1962

He recognised Japan significant role in aiding Tanzania development, particularly in the sectors of energy, agriculture, water, infrastructure and capacity building. Kombo expressed gratitude to the Japanese government, particularly through JICA, for its involvement in various key projects across Tanzania.

Notable initiatives include the Mfugale Flyover, Gerezani Bridge, Selandar Bridge and the Malindi Fish Market in Zanzibar. These projects have had a profound impact on Tanzania’s development, particularly in transportation and agriculture.

“JICA has done incredible work in our country, helping Tanzanians at the grassroots level. We are forever grateful for their support,” he said.

Minister Kombo also noted the 32-year partnership between Africa and Japan through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), established in 1993.

He said that TICAD has been crucial in supporting Africa’s efforts to enhance trade, investment and sustainable development across the continent.

Kombo further stressed the importance of continued collaboration between Tanzania and Japan, pointing out that the TICAD framework has played a vital role in promoting economic growth and development in Africa.

On his part, the newly Japanese Ambassador-Designate to Tanzania, Yoichi Mikami, expressed his delight at the strong ties between Japan and Tanzania. He noted the positive interactions and growing people-to-people exchanges.

Mikami reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation, especially under the TICAD initiative.

“This year, the ninth TICAD summit will be held in Yokohama. I believe that Tanzania will engage in discussions to further strengthen the relationship between our beautiful countries,” he said.

He also said that the Expo 2025 in Osaka-Kansai will take place this year, with Tanzania’s National Day set for May 25. Mikami expressed hope that the Expo will further cement the strong ties between the two nations.

The two leaders expressed optimism for the future of Tanzania-Japan relations, with a focus on deepening collaboration in various sectors to ensure mutual growth and prosperity for both nations.

The event highlighted not only the enduring friendship between the two countries but also their shared commitment to fostering sustainable development across Africa and beyond. — NNNDAILYNEWS
