ABUJA, March 7 (NNN-XINHUA) — At least 92 suspected terrorists were killed and 111 others arrested in various operations by Nigerian troops in the past week, the military said.
The nationwide operations against “criminal elements” were highly successful, Markus Kangye, a spokesman for the military, told the media in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, while giving an update on the security situation in the country.
A total of 101 suspected terrorists and their families, comprising 11 adult males, 39 adult females, and 51 children, surrendered to troops during the operations, Kangye said.
He noted that 75 hostages were freed from their captors during the period under review, adding that troops also recovered a total of 117 assorted weapons and 2,939 rounds of ammunition.
In the past week, the troops also arrested at least 18 oil thieves and thwarted oil theft operations in the country’s Delta region, the military spokesman said. He added that at least 452,396 liters of stolen crude oil, 224,175 liters of illegally refined automotive gas oil, and 1,920 liters of gasoline were recovered during the operations. — NNN-XINHUA
