Kenya: Medical experts pitch camp in Kisii to probe mysterious disease

NAIROBI, March 3 (NNN-KBC) –The Ministry of Health has deployed a team of experts to South Mugirango, Kisii, to investigate an outbreak of an unknown disease that has affected more than 200 people in three villages.

Public Health and Professional Standards PS, Mary Muthoni, confirmed that the medical experts will reinforce the county government team already on the ground to determine the cause of the disease from the samples collected.

Speaking in Mwea, Kirinyaga, at an AIPCA church event, she stated that the ministry has intensified surveillance and screening efforts to identify the cause of the outbreak.

A multi-agency government team has urged locals to visit nearby hospitals as the ministry awaits the results from the government chemist.

Since the outbreak began, an unconfirmed number of individuals have been hospitalized at Tabaka Mission Hospital, Nyatike Level Two Hospital, Prina Hospital, and Royal Hospital in Rongo, among other private healthcare facilities.

Those affected are reporting symptoms which include severe diarrhea with bloody stools, fever, and intense headaches. — NNN-KBC
