Tanzania makes strides in jobs creation

DODOMA, March 2 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE Tanzanian government’s initiatives to address unemployment challenge, especial- ly among youth, are yielding positive results, with over 3.2 million people securing jobs in both the public and private sectors.

Additionally, 3,463 Tanzanians have been facilitated to access employment opportunities abroad, thanks to a joint programme between the government and private agencies.

This was revealed by the Minister for Finance, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, in Dodoma while officiating at the 2025 High-Level Strategic Dialogue meeting.

The event brought together ministers, ambassadors, top government officials, heads of cooperation and non-state actors for discussions aimed at enhancing the alignment of development priorities with Tanzania’s Vision 2050.

Dr Mwigulu said that, as part of efforts to tackle unemployment, the government has facilitated vocational training for 41,886 youth, equipping them with the necessary skills for employment or self-employment.

Furthermore, the Finance minister noted that 1,148 companies involved in youth development were supported in securing concessional loans totalling 3.2bn/- under a government guarantee in 2023.

“At the same time, Zanzibar government provided soft loans to small entrepreneurs, benefiting 2,045 individuals in both Unguja and Pemba, with a total of 15.8bn/- disbursed between 2022 and 2025,” he informed the meeting delegates.

Beyond employment, Minister Mwigulu highlighted  Tanzania’s achievements in various sectors, including health, education, water and fiscal policy reforms, which have helped attract invest- ments.

In the health sector, he pointed out that the percentage of births attended by healthcare professionals increased from 80 per cent in 2019/20 to 94.6 per cent in 2023/24.

This contributed to a significant reduction in maternal mortality rates, from 454 per 100,000 live births in 2019/20 to 104 per 100,000 in 2022/23.

Last month, President Samia Suluhu Hassan received the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers Award in recognition of her exemplary leadership in improving maternal and child health in Tanzania.

The foundation considered key factors such as the reduction in maternal and child mortality, decreased malnutrition and overall im- provements in public health.

The 2025 High-Level Strategic Dialogue was held under the theme: “Towards Vision 2050: Accelerating Resilience and Inclusive Development in Times of Uncertainty.”

Delivering the speech on behalf of Zanzibar’s Minister of State, President’s Office for Finance and Planning, Dr Saada Mkuya, the isles’ Minister for Trade and Industrial Development, Omar Said Shaaban, emphasised that the global economy is currently facing volatility, geopolitical shifts, and escalating climate change impacts

“In this context,” he said, “Tanzania remains committed to sustaining a high level of economic growth, diversifying its economic structure and maintaining prudent fiscal management.

Our macroeconomic policies will focus on maintaining stability while fostering innovation, entrepreneurship and industrialisation as catalysts for job creation and economic resilience.” — NNN-DAILYNEWS
