MEXICO CITY, Feb 25 (NNN-XINHUA) – At least five people died and six others were poisoned by carbon monoxide yesterday, due to a fire in an addiction rehabilitation centre in the south of the Mexican capital, local authorities said.
The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City said, it “learned five people lost their lives and six more poisoned by carbon monoxide due to a fire” in a property located in the Ocotla Chico neighbourhood of Tlalpan borough.
The paramedics who attended the site diagnosed five people without vital signs due to possible carbon monoxide inhalation, while the other six were treated at the scene, the SSC said, in a statement.
“According to the initial reports, the flames started in several appliances, while clothes and other furniture were also burned,” the agency said, adding, the person in charge of the addiction centre and four workers are being investigated for the case.
The Mayor’s Office of Tlalpan said, it “deeply regretted the loss of human lives and expresses its solidarity with the affected families,” in addition to reiterating its “commitment to the safety and well-being of citizens, while remaining in close collaboration with the authorities to provide necessary support.”
It added, the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City has begun proceedings to clarify the facts and determine who is responsible for the case.– NNN-XINHUA
