SYDNEY, Feb 23 (NNN-AAP) – One man was dead and another was in hospital under arrest, following a standoff with police north of Sydney, in Australia’s state of New South Wales (NSW).
Police in NSW said today that, officers were responding to reports of a concern for welfare, at a unit in the city of Tamworth, over 300 km north of Sydney, yesterday afternoon, when they found a 47-year-old with critical head injuries and another man armed with a knife.
The armed man, aged 55, locked himself in a bedroom before climbing onto the roof of the building, NSW Police said.
Ambulance paramedics treated the 47-year-old at the scene before taking him to a nearby hospital where he was declared deceased.
Police secured the area around the unit block and tactical officers and negotiators were called to the scene. NSW Police said that, officers were speaking with the man when he fell from the roof. He was treated by paramedics for the stab wounds and taken to hospital under police guard in a serious but stable condition.
“Initial inquiries allege the two men were known to each other,” a police statement said.
A crime scene has been established at the property, and detectives have commenced an investigation into the incident.– NNN-AAP
