Colombia, the Country with the Most Displaced People Worldwide

Bogota, June 20 (NNN-Prensa Latina) More than 118,000 Colombians were forced to flee their homes in 2018 as a result of the violence, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported Wednesday.

According to the UN agency, Colombia continues to be the country with the highest number of displaced people in the world, with almost eight million in recent years.

This Wednesday was published the report of the UNHCR ‘Global Trends: Forced Displacement in 2018’, which reflected an increase in this phenomenon on the planet, with 41.3 million displaced people, 1.3 million more than in 2017.

In the South American country, the most affected are Norte de Santander, Nariño, Antioquia and Choco departments, where organized crime gangs compete for control of drug trafficking routes. In the Pacific region, displacement affects mainly indigenous and Afro-Colombian populations.

The assessment is worrying, says Mauricio Garcia, Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service in Colombia and Latin America.
