Philippine VP Asks Supreme Court To Stop Her Impeachment Trial

MANILA, Feb 19 (NNN-PNA) – Philippine Vice President, Sara Duterte, filed a petition with the Supreme Court, questioning the validity and constitutionality of the impeachment complaint, transmitted by the House of Representatives, a spokesperson for the High Court said, today.

The Supreme Court spokesperson confirmed that the High Court received Duterte’s petition yesterday. However, the High Court has yet to take up the matter.

In her petition, a law firm representing Duterte said, the impeached vice president “seeks judicial intervention from the High Court, to uphold due process and raises serious legal and constitutional concern.”

On Feb 5, the House of Representatives impeached Duterte after 215 out of its 306 Members signed and verified the impeachment complaint against her.

Aside from Duterte’s petition, a group of lawyers supporting the vice president also filed a separate petition before the Supreme Court yesterday, to dismiss the impeachment and prevent the Senate from proceeding with a trial, citing the lack of time devoted to its evaluation in the House.– NNN-PNA
