Kenya, China committed to deepening trade ties through strategic initiatives

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan and Kenya’s Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui

NAIROBI, Feb 19 (NNN-KBC) — China and Kenya are committed to strengthening their trade relationship through strategic initiatives that promote mutual benefits and economic growth. This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan and Kenya’s Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui.

During the meeting, Kinyanjui reiterated that China remains a key trade partner and revealed that both sides are exploring additional market opportunities for Kenyan traders and products in China.

“Our discussions focused on strengthening trade ties, including increasing cargo flights to China to facilitate the export of fresh produce,” said Kinyanjui.

He pointed out the importance of this initiative, especially given that Kenya currently imports goods worth USD 3.6 billion from China, while exports stand at USD 300 million.

“We are actively working to bridge this trade gap,” he added.

Ambassador Guo highlighted Kenya as one of Africa’s most attractive investment destinations and indicated that she would promote opportunities to attract Chinese investment in key sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and automotive manufacturing, within the country’s Special Economic Zones.

“We discussed investment opportunities, industrial cooperation, and enhancing trade partnerships for mutual economic growth,” she stated after the meeting.

There is also a growing emphasis on e-commerce collaboration between China and Kenya as a means to boost trade relations by providing new channels for business transactions and market access.

China has been Africa’s largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years, with its involvement spanning various sectors, including infrastructure development, energy, and manufacturing.

The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has played a crucial role in fostering closer trade ties between Beijing and the continent. The recent FOCAC Summit in Beijing focused on key areas such as market access, balanced trade, and value addition, which are vital for enhancing economic cooperation between China and African nations, including Kenya. — NNN-KBC
