Japan Pledges To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions By 60 Percent In Fiscal 2035

TOKYO, Feb 18 (NNN-NHK) – The Japanese government approved a new basic energy plan today, emphasising the country’s targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent in fiscal 2035, and by 73 percent in fiscal 2040.

Meanwhile, nuclear power is expected to account for about 20 percent of Japan’s total energy output in fiscal 2040, around the same level as the fiscal 2030 target of 20 percent to 22 percent, marking a departure from the government’s earlier resolve to minimise reliance on nuclear energy, following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Renewable energy sources will account for around 40 percent to 50 percent of the country’s energy mix in fiscal 2040, almost double the 22.9 percent recorded in fiscal 2023, according to the plan.– NNN-NHK
