Cuba officializes Cuban Sign Language in Official Gazette

HAVANA, Feb 8 (NNN-ACN) — The recognition and regulation of Cuban Sign Language as an official communication system for the country’s deaf community was formalized with the publication of the corresponding decree law in the Official Gazette, confirmed Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the country.

According to what the president published on X, accompanied by the hashtag #CubaEsInclusión, this measure responds to a dream of the deaf community in Cuba, which has become a reality, under the Marti’s principle of “With all and for the good of all”.

The conception of training actions, as well as the training of interpreters are premises of the Decree-Law on Cuban Sign Language, Granma newspaper reported.

This regulation defends accessibility to the physical, social, economic and cultural environment, so that these people can fully enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms, under equal conditions.

Likewise, it establishes the training of translators in sign language and encourages development projects and the production of literature.

In this sense, the Decree-Law states that mechanisms must be established to guarantee the categorization and evaluation of the quality of interpretation and translation services in the different areas, with emphasis on television. — NNN-ACN
