African Court calls for reparations for women, children in war-torn areas

ARUSHA (Tanzania), Feb 6 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — WOMEN in regions plagued by civil wars and conflicts must receive compensation for their suffering, as they are often the most affected by such atrocities.

This call was made by Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud, President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, during a judges’ training session held at the court premises in Arusha.

The session, themed ‘Rendering Justice for Women Through Reparations,’ focused on the need to address gender-based injustices.

“We have also been reviewing customary laws that contradict international agreements on gender equality and human rights, such as early marriages and women’s right to inherit property,” said Lady Justice Aboud.

She cited the case of the Republic of Mali, which was compelled to amend its laws to align with international human rights agreements following a case filed at the African Court in Arusha.

“It is the responsibility of the court to set standards, ensuring that laws comply with human rights principles and modern civilisation,” she added.

The training was attended by African Court judges, ambassadors, legal scholars and representatives from government and non-governmental organisations.

Dr Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, a professor of Public Law and former United Nations Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, delivered a presentation on ‘Gender Mainstreaming in Reparations.’

She addressed historical injustices and systemic violations affecting women and girls, advocating for gendersensitive reparations.

Speaking on behalf of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NAWHRI), Programme Officer Foluso Adegalu highlighted the organisation’s commitment to supporting reparations for women’s rights in Africa.

“Women are among the most vulnerable groups on the continent. The discussion on reparations is critical and as representatives of national human rights institutions, we are committed to strengthening the capacity and role of the African Court in promoting and protecting human rights across Africa,” he stated. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
