North India Canal Mishap Death Toll Rises To Seven

NEW DELHI, Feb 2 (NNN-PTI) – The death toll of the mishap in a canal, in India’s northern state of Haryana, rose to seven, while five persons are still missing, a local official confirmed, yesterday.

The mishap occurred late Friday night, when a vehicle carrying them fell into the Bhakhra canal, in Haryana’s Fatehabad district. Two persons, the vehicle’s driver and an 11-year-old boy, managed to swim out of the canal.

The dead included children and women.

One dead body was recovered Friday night, while six dead bodies were recovered yesterday, from the neighbouring state of Punjab, the official said, adding that, efforts are being made to find the five persons still missing.

There were a total of 14 persons inside the vehicle, when it fell into the canal, with water flowing in strong currents. The victims were returning from a wedding in Punjab state.– NNN-PTI
