PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 1 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The president of Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council, Leslie Voltaire confirmed that trafficking in human organs is another problem that burdens the lives of inhabitants of the Caribbean nation.
Voltaire described as worrying the disappearances of citizens, and the progression of this crime linked to the illegal trade.
Vital body parts such as kidneys, liver and hearts are extracted and sold abroad for exorbitant sums, he pointed out.
Organ trafficking is a global problem, and Haiti does not seem to be exempt from it, Voltaire was quoted as saying by the Kominotek News website.
His statements underline the seriousness of the situation, hence his assertion that sometimes when people disappear and their bodies are never found.
This may be an indicator that an organ trafficking network is structured in Haiti.
According to Kominotek News, these disappearances could be driven by international networks that exploit the vulnerability of people in contexts of political and social instability.
It is vital to launch a campaign to inform the population of the risks involved in this crime, but broader and more concrete actions will be necessary to eradicate this practice. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
