Parlatino demands respect for migrants’ dignity

PANAMA CITY, Feb 1 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), based in Panama since 2008, demanded respect for the dignity of migrants and the peoples of the region, incompatible with degrading treatment.

According to a statement from the board of directors of the Parlatino, excesses such as the practice of hunting and reward, or the announcement of the confinement of thousands of undocumented persons in a naval base (Guantanamo, in Cuba), known internationally for housing a torture and detention center, outside of any jurisdiction or court, are repudiated.

“We reject all types of measures that put the lives, security and dignity of Latin American and Caribbean migrants at risk,” the text stressed in a context marked by the arrival of US President Donald Trump at the White House on Jan 20, who threatened to carry out mass deportations, despite the proven contributions of migrant communities to that nation.

The regional legislature urged the Parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean, together with the Executives of the States, as well as the regional and international community, to seek mechanisms that ensure respect for the human rights of all persons subject to mass deportation, mitigating the possible adverse effects on their families and communities.

“We maintain the commitment to political dialogue focused on addressing the causes of current migratory flows, as well as to negotiation in the service of orderly, regular and safe migration, according to the international legal order and the national laws in force on the matter,” the Parlatino stressed. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
