MTWARA (Tanzania), Jan 31 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — CASHEW growers in Tanzania have earned a total of 1.62tri/- so far, from the sale of raw cashew nuts during the ongoing 2024/2025 cashew trading season.
The Director General of the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania (CBT), Alfred Francis made the announcement, revealing that 320,476 tonnes of raw cashew nuts have been sold since the cashew auctions began on October 11th last year.
“Since the start of the trading season, 320,476 tonnes of cashews have been sold,” Francis said, noting that this year’s production has surpassed previous seasons.
“This season’s production of cashew nuts has reached a historic high, rewarding farmers with significant earnings in just six weeks.”
Francis shared this update during a press briefing on market trends and raw cashew nuts sales. He urged farmers to continue bringing their cashew stocks to warehouses for sale, as auctions are ongoing in various cashew-growing regions.
Regarding pricing, Francis said that prices have fallen due to sluggish demand in the global market.
However, he said that the current prices are still relatively favourable based on global demand for the commodity.
He encouraged farmers to make informed decisions to ensure their cashews are sold before the season concludes.
At the start of the season, cashew prices ranged between 4,000/- and 3,000/- per kilogramme, but have since dropped to 2,900/- due to reduce demand.
According to CBT, the number of buyers bidding at the auctions has decreased, as many have already purchased sufficient stock early in the season.
In related news, the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) in Mtwara Region reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all cashew nuts destined for export are transported via the port of Mtwara, as directed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Mtwara Port Manager, Ferdinand Nyathi, recently told reporters that 79,000 tonnes of cashews have already been exported through the port as part of the government’s directive.
“So far, 79,000 tonnes have been handled and shipped abroad through Mtwara Port,” he said, adding that five different ships have been involved in transporting the cashews.
Nyathi also noted that more cashews are currently being processed at the port, ready to be shipped abroad. Several ships have arrived, some to load containers for cashew stuffing and others to collect the cashews for export. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
