DAR ES SALAAM, Jan 29 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — AS the world celebrates World Privacy Day, Tanzania has achieved remarkable milestones in data privacy and protection, establishing itself as a regional leader in digital governance.
Through transformative measures, the country has safeguarded personal data and increased public awareness of privacy rights in the digital age.
A recent report titled “Privacy and Data Protection: A Key to the Growth of the Digital Economy in Tanzania” highlights the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges of the digital era.
The report underscores key achievements resulting from the government’s efforts to enhance data protection and privacy, including the enactment of comprehensive legislation and the development of a forward-looking digital strategy that paves the way for a secure, inclusive and prosperous digital future.
Among the significant milestones is the enactment of the Personal Data Protection Act (2022), which mandates both public and private institutions to obtain individuals’ consent before using their data.
The Act has established a robust legal framework ensuring transparency, accountability and the protection of citizens’ privacy.
Another achievement is the launch of the Digital Economy Strategy (2024– 2034), demonstrating the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and competitive digital economy.
This strategy prioritises the safe management of personal data while also encouraging innovation and resilience within Tanzania’s digital ecosystem.
It outlines measures to create a secure and trustworthy digital environment for businesses and individuals alike.
The report also highlights the success of public awareness campaigns, where the government has made significant strides in educating citizens about their privacy rights and data protection.
Nationwide campaigns, delivered through radio programmes, television broadcasts and seminars, aim to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their personal information in the digital space.
In addition to domestic progress, Tanzania’s efforts in enhancing digital security have earned international acclaim. In 2024, Tanzania was ranked Tier 1 in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
This prestigious recognition highlights Tanzania as a global leader in cybersecurity and a role model for East, Central and Southern Africa. The ranking reflects the government’s dedication to implementing robust cybersecurity measures and fostering a safe digital environment.
Data Privacy Day, celebrated annually, aims to raise awareness and promote best practices for protecting personal data and privacy.
Tanzania’s achievements demonstrate its dedication to advancing digital governance and ensuring the safe use of technology for its citizens.
This year’s theme, “Ensuring Privacy and Protecting Personal Data in the Digital Era,” calls for collaborative efforts to respect privacy and safeguard personal data in alignment with national laws and international standards. — NNN-DAILYNEWS
