Infant Died, Five Injured In House Fire In Australian Island State

SYDNEY, Jan 20 (NNN-AAP) – An infant died, and five other people have been injured, in a house fire in the Australian state of Tasmania.

Emergency services were called to an address in Rokeby, in the eastern suburbs of the state capital of Hobart, shortly after 9.00 a.m. local time, yesterday, where they found the house fully ablaze.

An infant girl was found deceased inside the residence. Another child and an adult were pulled from the home and taken to hospital with serious injuries. Three other children were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Speaking at a press conference, Tasmania Police Inspector, Darren Latham, said, the house was completely destroyed and that the child who sustained serious injuries was in a critical condition in hospital, while the woman, who received a laceration to her arm, was stable.

Latham said, police believe that about eight people, mostly relatives, were inside the house at the time of the fire.

Fire investigators from the Tasmania Fire Service have commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire. Latham said that, there was no evidence to suggest anything suspicious, but that police were not ruling anything out.– NNN-AAP
