WFP announces first photography contest in Cuba

HOLGUÍN (Cuba), Jan 14 (NNN-ACN) — Intended to raise awareness about nutritional security through visual art, the World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations announced the first creative photography contest in Cuba, called Miradas que alimentan (Looks that Feed).

Etienne Labande, WFP representative in Cuba, said that this contest gives young people and adults alike an opportunity to take shots revealing of the importance of and challenges facing food and sustainable development, an initiative based on the fact that photography exerts a huge influence on today’s society given its ability to convey emotions and tell stories capable of sensitizing people to this issue and promoting change.

“This is an original way of encouraging social commitment to such a prioritized topic and fostering the development of projects to address it on a local and global level”, he stressed.

Sponsored by the Department of Photography of the University of the Arts, the National Council of Visual Arts and the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, Miradas… is part of one of the WFP’s strategies in Cuba to socialize its mission of contributing to healthy diets and eating habits. — NNN-ACN
