KABUL, Jan 5 (NNN-BNA) – Multiple highways in Afghanistan, including Salang, the main highway linking the country’s national capital, Kabul, to nine northern provinces, were inaccessible to traffic, due to heavy snowfalls, an official at the Ministry of Public Work said.
“Salang highway has been blocked due to severe snowfalls, storms, strong winds and dusty fog since Friday morning,” Mohammad Ashraf Haqshinas, spokesman for the ministry, posted on his X account.
According to Haqshinas, the highway’s maximum snow depth has reached 1.16 metres.
Since Thursday morning, 27 out of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces have been experiencing heavy snowfalls, where the temperatures have decreased to around minus 15 degrees Celsius in some areas of the country.– NNN-BNA
